I have been wondering why some self-professing Christians use vulgar language. I understand some who have repented and want to give it up but still use it. I am talking about the ones who know what the Bible says about the tongue and still use it to utter a curse word. I thought Christians were to use their tongues to spread the good news and build up people. What happened?
Is it that some think it will make them seem more down to earth with non-believing folks? Is it because they want to be cool? Or is using foul language a way of telling God that this part, people won’t let go for Him?
I’ve had my share of saying some unpleasant things. When God changed me, I figured that the foul language would need to go. It is tempting to say something ugly sometimes. Unfortunately, if it’s not out of my mouth, it’s in my head.
God graciously gives the Holy Spirit to believers to fight off sin. I believe as a child of God, Christians are called to sacrifice every impure action, word, and thought. If it is not glorifying to God, it is not worth hanging onto. There are numerous things Christians debate about but the use of foul language in its community should, I think, be a given.
I encourage believers who are struggling with this to pray and seek guidance from the Lord. If the word is not being used in a beneficial way, why say it? If a foul word is being used to throw in some “cool” factor, who are you trying to impress? God or man?
