If you’re considering a career in cinematography, one of the major things you will need to think over is what equipment you need. This is a list of the most vital gear, along with some suggestions. It’s likely that I will miss something and need to adjust and add items to the list in the future.

An Awesome Camera

DSLRs If you’re looking for a simple and affordable DSLR, a good option would be the Canon t5i. On the other hand, if you want a full-frame camera with great low-light capabilities you might want to go with a higher level DSLR like the Canon 5D Mark III.

Blackmagic The Blackmagic Cinema Camera is another camera that has caught my attention recently. It shoots uncompressed RAW footage with a very wide range, allowing for much more flexibility in post-production. I’ve also ready that the Sigma 18-35mm f/18 is one of the best lenses to get for it.

A Great Microphone & an Audio Recorder

The 2nd most important thing to capturing high quality video, is high quality audio to match. A good all-purpose solution would be a portable recorder with a built in mic like the Zoom h4n mounted on a tripod that you can move around as needed. If you have someone who can assist you in working a boom mic and don’t mind plugging it into your camera, a great option would be the Rode NTG3 attached to the Rode Boom Arm. (Also compatible with the h4n)
